Summary:
The owner would like to remove a garage/shed that is in poor condition at 804 5th Street. The State Historic Preservation Commission (SHPO) reviewed the project and it does have the potential to encroach upon, damage, or destroy historic properties. SHPO notes it appears there are no feasible and prudent alternatives in this case.
Background:
The property is located within the Central Residential Historic District and both the home and garage are considered contributing structures. According to the City’s records the shed was constructed in 1954 and the home was built in 1934. The garage is in an advanced state of deterioration. The applicant has completed an 11.1 review application and staff is seeking comments from the Brookings Historic Preservation Committee. The applicant would like to apply for a demolition permit to remove the garage. If the City grants a demolition permit, SHPO has requested notification.
The BHPC shall review the project based on the criteria below:
• Consideration of all feasible and prudent alternatives
• Economic practicability
• Minimize harm to historic properties
